Indian Quality Management Practices

A Pioneering Indo-Japanese-Korean-US Applied Research Study

Post liberalization, Indian industry had to suddenly and dramatically upgrade quality to world standards so that the Indian consumer could get access to world-class products and services. This dramatic change inspired industries to import not just modern technology, but also management techniques and practices from different companies and regions of the world. Thus, Industry witnessed a non-evolutionary amalgamation of different techniques viz. the TQM, TPM, Kaizen and Lean Production Systems from Japan, BPR and Six Sigma from the U.S., the ISO 9000 and ERP from Europe etc. This mix across different industry segments, sectors, technology level and size produced a wide array of practices and techniques which have been added, synthesized and adapted as to what works in the Indian context and what does not.

In this context a comprehensive research was undertaken by EMPI Business School, New Delhi and PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry jointly in conjunction with leading International Organisations like the Cleveland Advanced Manufacturing Program (CAMP), Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI), Ohio, USA, Mombusho Scholars Association of India (MOSAI), India, Japan, Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), Korea and Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAF), Germany, who came together for the first time in India, to systematically conceptualize, catalogue, classify and document the various quality practices in the Indian Industry.
